Because of the very dense canopy, little sunlight reaches the ground. In a dense forest, the canopy trees can block out over 95% of the sunlight. Though Tarzan movies would have us think otherwise, there is actually relatively little vegetation on the rainforest floor.
Many plants have waxy leaves that help repel the rain. Rainforest plants must either adapt to living with little sunlight under the forest canopy or grow quickly and find ways of reaching the sunlight above the canopy. For example vines quickly grow up the trunks and branches of trees to reach sunlight.
Although tropical rainforests receive 12 hours of sunlight daily, less than 2% of that sunlight ever reaches the ground. The tropical rainforest has dense vegetation, often forming three different layers–the canopy, the understory, and the ground layer.
Sunlight is really important in the rain forest. Many producers can’t live without sunlight. For example, all the rainforest trees grow tall because there is enough sunlight for them to grow tall enough. And if the trees don’t have enough to grow, they will die and soon the herbivores will have no food to eat and die.

The forest floor, the bottom-most layer, receives only 2% of the sunlight. Only plants adapted to low light can grow in this region.
