Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest nation in the world. It forms an enormous triangle on the eastern side of the continent with a 4,500-mile (7,400-kilometer) coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It has borders with every South American country except Chile and Ecuador.
The Northeast Region of Brazil ( Portuguese: Região Nordeste do Brasil; [ʁeʒiˈɐ̃w̃ nɔʁˈdɛstʃi du bɾaˈziw]) is one of the five official and political regions of the country according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Cartographer Esri UK has created a map that shows precisely which countries are directly across the sea from any point on the UK coastline. Viewpoints were plotted when there was a significant change in the direction of the UK coastline. At each viewpoint we assumed the person would be facing perpendicular to the coastline.
The Zona da Mata comprises the rainforest zones of Nordeste (part of the Atlantic Forest or Mata Atlântica) in the humid eastern coast, where the region’s largest capital cities are also located. The forest area was much larger before suffering from centuries of deforestation and exploration.
It encloses the São Francisco River and drainage basin, which were instrumental in the exploration, settlement and economic development of the region. The region lies entirely within the earth’s tropical zone and encompasses Caatinga, Atlantic Forest and part of the Cerrado ecoregions.
