A plasma igniter has been developed for initiating combustion in liquid-propellant rocket engines. The device propels a hot, dense plasma jet, consisting of elemental fluorine and fluorine compounds, into the combustion chamber to ignite the cold propellant mixture.
A separate ignition system, called igniter, is assembled in the rocket motor to achieve the task. Igniters for SRMs are basically of two types, viz., Pyrogen igniters used for large rocket motors of ballistic missiles, and Pyrotechnic Igniters used for small rocket motors.

Can a Model Rocket Engine Expire? It’s important that you remember that, in the proper storage environment, some model rocket engines do not expire for several years! The Estes Rocket FAQ page even says that their engines “do not have a shelf life” as long as they are stored in a cool, dry place.
Igniters for model rocket motors are fragile, and replacements are expensive. Making your own is easy and cheap; the results are very reliable and suitable for most uses. Modern commercial igniters can send a rocket soaring with just a touch of current. When inserted properly they’re very reliable.
That end is then dipped in a pyrogen which is a chemical mixture that will catch fire easily and burn hot to ignite the rocket motor propellant. The actual configuration of igniters varies greatly but except for some small model rocket igniters, all have these three components.
Figure 12 shows the current draw of a standard Estes igniter when augmented with IgniterMan Pyrogen. Again, the igniter is connected to a 12 VDC lead-acid battery. Figure 12.
