The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art/Opened
The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art opened its doors in 2002 with a bold but simple vision: to ensure that picture-book illustration, as an art form, would be celebrated around the world.
Inspired, they decided to create a museum in the United States that would also honor picture books, as works of art and for their educational value. Residents of Western Massachusetts, the Carles chose a piece of land beside the Hampshire College campus in Amherst for the museum site.
Carle was born in the United States, grew up in Germany and returned to the U.S., where his career as a designer, writer and illustrator took off. In 2002, he and his wife, Barbara, created The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Death. Carle died on May 23, 2021, at his summer studio in Northampton, Massachusetts, from kidney failure, a few weeks before his 92nd birthday.

This museum tucked onto a corner of the Hampshire College campus is a delight. It is small but roomy, making it a perfect place for young children. Visitors are met with bursts of color, which have the effect of improving one’s mood. One large gallery is devoted to Eric Carle’s… Best museum in Mass! One of the best museums I’ve ever experienced.
