Hawaii was a sovereign state between 1894 and 1898 before it became a territory. Five states were added during the 20th century. The last states to be added to the US were Alaska and Hawaii in 1959….States and Their Dates of Admission to the Union.

In 1959, Hawaii’s status was linked to Alaska’s and both territories became states that year. It took 60 years from the time Hawaii became a United States territory until it was declared a state on August 21st, 1959. A sovereignty movement still exists today among Native Hawaiians.
The acceptance of statehood for Hawaii was not without its share of controversy. There were Native Hawaiians who protested against statehood. Prior to admission, various bills creating the state were stalled in congressional hearings since the early 1900s.
A: Alaska became the 49th state to enter the Union on Jan 3, 1959. Later that year, Hawaii would become the 50th state on August 21.
Because of these nationalistic views, President William McKinley annexed Hawaii from the United States. Hawaii’s statehood was deferred by the United States until 1959 because of racial attitudes and nationalistic politics.
