Establishing Roots Established in 1733 when General James Oglethorpe and 120 fellow passengers on the ship Anne landed on a bluff along the Savannah River, Oglethorpe named the 13th and final American colony Georgia after England’s King George II. Savannah became the first city of this new land.

The first group of representatives met in Savannah in 1751. When Georgia transitioned to a royal colony in 1754, Savannah was established as the seat of government in the colony and was home to the office of the royal governor, the Commons House of Assembly, and the court system.
The Salzburger Emigrants were a group of German-speaking Protestant refugees from the Catholic Archbishopric of Salzburg (now in present-day Austria) that immigrated to the Georgia Colony in 1734 to escape religious persecution.
Most Salzburgers deserted the area at that time and went in search of employment and fertile farm land in other locations. The town was retaken by American forces in 1782, and was named the capital of Georgia for two weeks. Ebenezer steadily declined after the war and had nearly disappeared by 1855.
As the Purysburg continued its trip down the coastline to Georgia, March 11-12, 1734, the ship grounded on a sand bar increasing fear of a shipwreck. Finally, on March 12th, 1734, the first Salzburgers landed at Savannah. General James Oglethorpe and the inhabitants of the City welcomed the Salzburgers.
A replica of the orphanage serves as a museum, and several monuments celebrating the Salzburgers have been erected in Effingham County and Savannah.

During the 5th century BC, the Celts arrived and began to make this part of Austria their home. Juvavum prospered for several centuries and the community began to grow in size.
George, a German duke and a Lutheran, sympathized with the Salzburgers and offered them a place in his Georgia colony. About 300 Salzburgers, under the leadership of pastors Johann Martin Boltzius and Israel Gronau, accepted the invitation.
