After a failed Canadian invasion known as the Battle of Quebec (December 1775 – May 1776) left much of the Continental Army beaten, sick and in retreat, the British hoped to quash rebellion once and for all by isolating the New England colonies from the other American colonies.

Battle of Long Island/Start dates
On August 27, 1776 the British Army successfully moved against the American Continental Army led by George Washington. The battlewas part of aBritish campaign to seize control of New York and thereby isolate New England from the rest of the colonies.
Before the Battle Washington marched his army from Boston to New York and ordered them to start preparing to defend the city. Sure enough, a large British fleet arrived off the coast of New York in July. They set up camp on Staten Island across from New York. The British sent across men to negotiate with Washington.
Casualties at the Battle of Long Island: British casualties were around 400 men killed and wounded, while the Americans lost around 2,000 men killed, wounded and captured, and several guns.

First Battle of Saratoga: Freeman’s Farm The opposing armies came face to face on September 19 on the abandoned farm of Loyalist John Freeman near Saratoga, New York. Known as the Battle of Freeman’s Farm or the First Battle of Saratoga, the fierce fighting lasted for several hours.
The first Battle of the Revolutionary War was triggered, when the British army tried to seize ammunition in the Concord of Massachusetts. This was known as the Battle of Concord, and was fought in 1775.
Burgoyne had lost 1,000 men in the two battles, leaving him outnumbered by roughly 3 to 1; American losses came to about 500 killed and wounded. Burgoyne had also lost several of his most effective leaders, his attempts to capture the American position had failed, and his forward line was now breached.
Battle of Long Island. In July, the British under the command of General William Howe landed a few miles across the harbor from Manhattan on the sparsely-populated Staten Island, where they were reinforced by ships in Lower New York Bay during the next month and a half, bringing their total force to 32,000 troops.
