By 1816, the first independent black denomination, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, came into existence, and was quickly followed by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in 1821.

Major William Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale was built in 1838 during the Seminole War under the command of U.S. Major William Lauderdale. Frank Stranahan established a trading post and Indians lived in camps just west of coastal settlements and came by canoe into Fort Lauderdale from the Everglades to sell pelts, hides and bird plumes.
Located just off Franklin Square near City Market stands First African Baptist Church, the oldest black church in North America. Since it was organized in 1773 by Reverend George Leile, the church even predates the United States’ official formation in 1776.

Indianapolis became home to several African Methodist Episcopal Church congregations, but Bethel is the city’s oldest African American congregation. Originally established in 1836 and known as Indianapolis Station, it had adopted the name of Bethel AME Church by 1869.
The San Miguel Mission, also called the San Miguel Chapel, is believed to be the oldest church structure built in the U.S. Although it is hard to pinpoint the exact date when the church was built, t he earliest documentation mentioning the church dates back to 1628 – this means that the San Miguel Mission was built prior to that time.
