Mexicans have divergent ancestry, including Spanish, African, indigenous and German. And while skin color in Mexico ranges from white to black, most people – 53 percent – identify as mestizo, or mixed race.
The Maya civilization, though also influenced by other Mesoamerican civilizations, developed a vast cultural region in south-east Mexico and northern Central America, while the Zapotec and Mixtec culture dominated the valley of Oaxaca, and the Purépecha in western Mexico.
Roman Catholic
Roman Catholic was the most common religion affiliation in Mexico in 2018. In a survey carried out between July and August of 2018, almost 81 percent of Mexican respondents claimed to be of catholic faith, whereas the second most chosen religion was evangelism, with only 1.3 percent of the people interviewed.
The recognition of indigenous languages and the protection of indigenous cultures is granted not only to the ethnic groups indigenous to modern-day Mexican territory but also to other North American indigenous groups that migrated to Mexico from the United States in the nineteenth century and those who immigrated from Guatemala in the 1980s.
Ethnic groups. Mexico’s population is composed of many ethnic groups, including indigenous American Indians (Amerindians), who account for less than one-tenth of the total.
Northern Mexico is overwhelmingly mestizo in both urban and rural areas. Mexicans of European descent, including those who immigrated during the 20th century, are largely concentrated in urban areas, especially Mexico City, and in the West.
A total of 78.84% people in Mexico reside in urban areas leaving a mere 21.16% to live in the rural areas of Mexico. Roughly half of the population lives in one of Mexico’s 55 metropolitan towns.
