No race or ethnic group constitutes a majority of California’s population: 39% of state residents are Latino, 36% are white, 15% are Asian or Pacific Islander, 6% are African American, fewer than 1% are Native American or Alaska Natives, and 3% are multiracial or other, according to the 2019 American Community Survey.

An October 2012 genetic study published in Science Magazine found that the Khoisan in southern Africa are the oldest ethnic group of modern humans, with their ancestral line originating about 100,000 years ago.
While growth within Latino communities is the most dramatic, they aren’t the only ethnic group to be experiencing growth. In 2010, 6.2% of people identified as Black/African American. In 2014, that number was up to 6.5%.
According to 2018 US Census Bureau estimates, California’s population was 59.5% White (36.6% Non-Hispanic White), 14.7% Asian, 13.8% Some Other Race, 5.8% Black or African American, 0.8% Native Americans and Alaskan Native, 0.4% Pacific Islander and 5.1% from two or more races.
The state officially categorizes its population into six groups: white, African American, Native American/Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, Asian, and Native Hawaiian. From those groups, Americans identity with ethnic groups that are even more specific.
The state has the fifth largest population of African Americans in the U.S., an estimated 2,299,072 residents. California’s Asian population is estimated at 4.9 million, approximately one-third of the nation’s estimated 15 million Asian Americans.
