South America’s major mineral resources are gold, silver, copper, iron ore, tin, and petroleum. These resources found in South America have brought high income to its countries especially in times of war or of rapid economic growth by industrialized countries elsewhere.
MINERAL RESOURCES Gold, silver, iron, copper, bauxite (aluminum ore), tin, lead, and nickel—all these minerals are abundant in Latin America. In addition, mines throughout the region produce precious gems, titanium, and tungsten. In fact, South America is among the world’s leaders in the mining of raw materials.
The extensive forests that cover about half of the continent constitute South America’s richest natural resource. With more than 1.5 million square miles of tropical rain forest, Brazil is the most densely forested country in the region.

This is due to the active volcanism occurring in the Lesser Antilles, caused by the Atlantic plate subducting beneath the Caribbean plate. Most countries import oil and gas, with the exception of Trinidad and Tobago, where oil and gas production accounts for over 85% of the natural resources present (Energy Information Administration, 2013).
South America has diverse agricultural products, vast mineral wealth, and plentiful freshwater. It also has rich fisheries and port s on three bodies of water: the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean.
Like most other countries in South America, Colombia’s economy is shaped by its natural resources like land and a wide array of mineral resources vital to its economic success. The natural resources in Colombia range from arable land to minerals such as gold and coal.
Rough waters all around Puerto Rico in the late summer and fall usually limit fishing to destinations closer to shore. Despite constraints to developing large-scale fishing industries in the Caribbean, offshore fishing on every island provides limited, although locally important, sources of food.
