On November 15, 2006, Crescent City in Del Norte County, California was hit by a tsunami generated by a M w 8.3 earthquake in the central Kuril Islands. Strong currents that persisted over an eight-hour period damaged floating docks and several boats and caused an estimated $9.2 million in losses.

The island chain known as the Kurils stretches north across the Pacific Ocean from the Japanese island of Hokkaido to the southern tip of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
Earthquake and damage Despite the proximity of the epicenter to that for the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, it ruptured a separate segment of the Sunda megathrust and was most likely triggered by stress changes associated with that earlier event.
Kuril Islands – Most affected by the damaging waves of this tsunami were the islands of Shikotan, Kunashir and Iturup, in the South Kurils. According to reports, Shikotan Island was one of the hardest-hit areas by both the earthquake and the tsunami.
