Over the course of our winters, we will see an average of 74.6 inches of snowfall, and we can have anywhere from 3 to 10 plus inches. Once in a while, we’ll even get major blizzards that dump 10 plus inches all at once! Statistically, it’s most common for our snowstorms to hit in November, December, or February.
For 21 days a year on average, the amount of new snow totals at least an inch. Snowstorms of over five inches a day normally occur three or four times a year. But major blizzards that dump ten inches or more in one day are rare events that don’t happen every year.
A semi-permanent low pressure center called the Aleutian Low gathers storms, the Polar Jet Stream consistently blows those storms into Alaska and a Positive PDO leads to more storms showing up in the Aleutian Low in Alaska. The Polar Jet Stream and the Aleutian Low define the storm track for the Alaska region.
In the two most populated areas, snow generally is present from late October through early April. Alaska’s second largest town, Fairbanks, will reach temperatures of -50 Fahrenheit nearly every winter. Snowfall throughout the state varies significantly and some mountainous regions receive 1000 inches per year.
Fact: The Interior Region of Alaska enjoys warm summers. Fairbanks often has summer temperatures in the 80s and occasionally gets up into the 90s.
